Over the last few days, the Balkan region is facing one of its greatest natural catastrophes, the floods. In times like this, people seem to forget the things that they thought were important – especially the political beliefs and the national affiliation that “made them different from one another”. They wake up their humanity. Is this a lesson for a new page of history in the region?
Three months’ worth of rain fell on the region in just three days, producing the worst floods ever since the rainfall measurements began some 120 years ago. This flooding forced thousands of people from their homes and left several dozens of dead. The constant rain and snow, so unusual for this period of year, made rivers “escape” outside their gorges; erasing villages, streets, monuments. It fostered landslides and soil destruction, causing loss of future harvest, water pollution and above all causing loss of lives.
Many people had to leave their homes for the second time, first time by the cause of human hatred, now due to the nature.
In times like this, people seem to forget the things that they thought were important – especially the political beliefs and the national affiliation that “made them different from one another” and they wake up their humanity. In natural catastrophes like these, we are all the same. Nature never recognizes the religion, the nation, the ideology… for nature, we are all the same. The flood did not pass one house to destroy another one. It destroyed all of them. Some say that Mother Nature is finally punishing us for our past actions.
If anything, this natural catastrophe produced only one good thing (if it can be called like that) – people from different parts of the country, different “nations” threw away their judgemental opinions and decided to help each other. With unselfish attitude, people helped wherever they could. Their acts were described as “crossing over the history events and showing their human side”. Many citizens from different cities, from different entities showed different Bosnia and Herzegovina to the world and to themselves. And returned hope in our future. The “ethnically cleaned” cities joined hands to help each other. The rapid organisation of help, group gatherings, collecting food, clothes, baby accessories, all this showed how we are human before all religion and political beliefs.
It is expected that some politicians will use the opportunity for their promotion, because after all elections will be help in October 2014. Soon, after all this, new stories and enemy orations will start to gather votes. It’s up to people to see if they want to be stuck in time of greyness and no sight of better cohabitation, or face some better future. Better for the Balkan society; for the mankind that suffered a lot and needs a new page of history – a page of peace and cooperation.
