On 17 and 18 November a group of young Europeans from FutureLab Europe met in Brussels to discuss the strengths and weakness of the current democratic system(s) with regards to the future challenges and to identifying the priorities for action. The workshop was hosted by the King Baudouin Foundation as a part of the Foundation’s initiative to look for ways of breathing new life into democracy in Belgium.

From 13 – 19 October the third FutureLab Europe Annual Forum took place in Brussels. It brought together the 23 new participants of FutureLab Europe: bright young professionals who want to play an active part in shaping the future direction of Europe. Each one of them has proven high potential within the programmes of ten European foundations which fund FutureLab Europe.

“Why should I care about the EU, especially when they put so much time on regulating curved cucumbers?” a confused citizen asks a campaigner handing out flyers for the upcoming European elections in May 2014. The line of reasoning, to many of us strangely familiar, might be rarer than we think. Yet, it says much about the challenges of communicating EU-politics and decision-making in Brussels.

“Why are citizens of the Balkans considered to be citizens of Europe?” was the topic of a panel discussion in Sarajevo on 22 July 2013. The event under the patronage of Željko Komšić, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, aimed at developing a quality discussion among young people on the similarities and differences between citizens of the Western Balkans and citizens of the rest of Europe. The conference concluded the project Plan Balkans: Europolitan, run by four FutureLab participants aiming to foster the youth participation in creating the mainstream ideas and public opinions about their Balkan countries’ European future.

Young Europeans in discussion with Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance. “The future is us!” was the title of a workshop in which active young Europeans from the network of foundations that organize the Berlin Foundation Week worked out their questions and issues to discuss with the German Minister of Finance. For FutureLab Europe Estefanía Almenta López, James Kilcourse and Zuzana Novakova took part. Wolfgang Schäuble, a strong supporter of the European idea and the face of austerity policy, was joined by three of the workshop participants on stage on 5 June 2013 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
